Karoo

This acrylic work captures a semi-arid landscape under a luminous sky, with a solitary windmill anchoring a composition of scattered buildings and vegetation rendered in warm, earthy tones. The foreground presents a patchwork of ochre and amber fields punctuated by desert plants, whilst the distant mountains glow in purple-blue. Van Rensburg’s characteristic impressionist approach is evident in the loose, expressive brushwork that conveys atmosphere and light rather than precise detail. His shift to acrylic in the early 1990s proved instrumental in reaching a wider audience for such regional subject matter.
