Waterfront

A waterfront settlement nestles beneath a distinctive peaked mountain, its buildings rendered in warm ochres and reds reflected in calm waters below. The composition balances architectural detail with atmospheric landscape, employing loose, gestural brushwork that dissolves forms into impressionistic suggestion. The palette shifts from golden light in the foreground to deep purples and blues in the water and distant peaks, creating temporal and spatial depth. Van Rensburg’s transition to acrylic as his primary medium in 1990 enabled the layered, luminous effects characteristic of this work.
