Ochre, red and grey tones drift across the surface in overlapping passages, with touches of white and black creating punctuation. The work balances representation and abstraction, suggesting a landscape or architectural space through its spatial recession and tonal transitions. Van Rensburg’s shift to acrylic in the 1990s enabled a new directness of mark-making that distinguishes his mature impressionist practice.
