Hippos

An adult hippopotamus and calf occupy the composition with assured, gestural brushwork rendered in acrylic. The figures are depicted in profile against a warm, abstracted ground of orange, red and ochre tones, with touches of blue and grey providing spatial depth. The artist captures the animals’ substantial forms through bold colour modulation and dynamic linework, creating an immediacy of presence. Mind Shana’s expressionist approach, informed by his self-taught practice since 2002, brings visceral energy to this study of wildlife.
