Gondola/ Venesie

A gondola cuts through the still waters of Venice, its solitary gondolier navigating past the weathered façades of palazzo architecture. The composition balances the horizontal plane of the canal against the vertical masses of the buildings, their brick and stone surfaces rendered in warm, earthy tones. Du Toit’s characteristic use of light and shadow defines the structural forms, whilst the reflective quality of the water anchors the scene.
