A solitary dwelling with corrugated iron roof commands the centre of a vast, arid landscape. The modest structure, rendered in warm ochres and cream, sits isolated beneath a golden tree, with a simple pole marker and fence visible across the dusty terrain. Du Toit’s treatment of light and shadow articulates the form with classical precision, whilst the expansive sky and distant mountains establish the austere character of the Free State interior. Oil on board allows the artist to work in his preferred medium of rich earthly tones.
