(c) Pumpkin & Garlic

Two pale, ridged pumpkins occupy the composition’s centre, rendered with careful attention to form and volume through subtle modulation of tone. A single garlic clove rests to the right, its cream-coloured surface catching light against the warm, shadowed ground. Du Toit’s restrained palette and controlled brushwork allow the play of natural light to define structure, whilst the intimate scale and austere arrangement exemplify his classical impressionistic approach to quotidian subjects.
