Puglo Picasso

A pug-faced creature with bulbous eyes and prominent ears dominates this small composition, its expression at once quizzical and characterful. The figure is rendered in bold black outlines with warm ochre and tan tones, set against a cream ground. The simplified, graphic approach—combining cartoon sensibility with painterly gesture—creates an immediate visual impact. Groenewald’s witty oeuvre of feline and animal works demonstrates his discovery of painting as a liberating counterpoint to his earlier design practice.
