Trees in the wind

A solitary tree bends dramatically against turbulent skies in this linocut, its trunk and canopy rendered with gestural vigour. The composition emphasises the tree’s struggle against the elements, with the wind-swept foliage occupying the upper portion whilst the surrounding landscape recedes into shadow below. Boonzaier’s characteristic bold linework and high-contrast chiaroscuro create a sense of movement and emotional intensity. The artist, a South African landscape painter and founder of the New Group, worked across multiple media throughout his extensive career.
