Two delicate Queen Anne’s lace blooms frame a single red butterfly positioned between them on a weathered, ochre ground. The flowers are rendered with precise linear detail, their intricate umbel structures clearly articulated, whilst the butterfly’s wings glow with naturalistic vermillion. The composition balances botanical observation with symbolic weight, the austere palette and aged surface lending gravitas to themes of transience. In Heyns’ practice, such floral subjects transcend decoration to embody cycles of vitality and decay.
