A vertical composition depicting three koi fish suspended in a darkened aquatic space, rendered in oil on board with remarkable precision. The uppermost fish, rendered in creams and whites, floats beneath a pair of yellow-green leaves; below, two further fish—one silvery-white and one brilliant in orange-red and gold—occupy the lower register. The work combines careful representational technique with an intimate, meditative quality, characteristic of Heyns’ obsessive pursuit of aesthetic refinement and his deeply conversational relationship with his medium.
