Two arum lilies are rendered in oil on board with an economy of form and colour. The flowers rise vertically against a muted, textured ground of grey and earth tones, their pale trumpet-like spathes catching warm yellow light. The composition is spare and contemplative, allowing the viewer’s attention to rest on the essential geometry and subtle modelling of each bloom. In Heyns’ practice, such floral subjects transcend decoration to embody cycles of vitality and decay, whilst serving as a counterpoint to deeper existential concerns.
