Mothers with Children

Two figures—a mother and child on each side—are rendered with exaggerated, elongated forms characteristic of expressionist drawing. The composition employs pen and ink over mixed media, with gestural linework defining the intertwined bodies and faces. Warm ochres and muted earth tones dominate the palette, enriched by touches of green and pink, whilst bold black outlines provide structural definition. The work conveys tenderness and intimacy through its fluid, economical mark-making. Claerhout’s drawings, executed in charcoal, pen-and-ink and crayon alongside his celebrated paintings, document the human subjects he encountered throughout his missionary life in South Africa.
