Two figures stride across a beach, their catch of fish held aloft in a gesture of quiet pride. The composition balances figuration with landscape, the figures rendered in warm earth tones that seem to float against the cooler sea and sky beyond. Langdown’s characteristic use of red-brown tonalities infuses the workers with dignity, whilst the soft, subtle handling of colour and light creates an atmosphere of unhurried labour. The work demonstrates the artist’s sympathetic observation of Cape coastal communities, a subject he returned to throughout his career.
