A charcoal study depicting figures engaged in agricultural labour, rendered with loose, gestural marks that convey movement and immediacy. The artist employs varied pressure and hatching to suggest volume and texture, whilst maintaining a spontaneous quality characteristic of working drawings. Claerhout’s prolific experimentation with charcoal and other media produced works of considerable warmth and humanity.
