A herd of cattle moves across an expansive, dust-laden plain beneath a distant mountain. The composition draws the eye across the horizontal breadth of the composition, with animals rendered in warm, earthy tones that merge with the parched landscape. Oil handling creates a sense of atmospheric haze and movement, whilst maintaining clear delineation of individual forms. Hertzog works from her Mpumalanga studio, drawing upon the farming heritage and rural character of her South African surroundings.
