Andre de Beer
Master in Oils
He was born in 1933 in Potchefstroom. From 1964 – 1970 he was Chairperson of the National Art Society of South Africa and also a member of the Curatorium of the Pretoria Art Museum. He was also art lecturer, senior lecturer, Head of the Art Department and Vice-Rector, at the Pretoria College of Education. He became a full-time painter in 1983.
An artiste of landscapes, portraits, still life, seascapes, genre and figures. Works in oil, watercolour, ink, pencil, charcoal and pastel. He captures everything perfect as if it is happening in the moment. Andre de Beer understands his subject and knows exactly what he wants to capture. He became famous for his “koerantverkopertjies” ,which can be seen as his trademark.
Andre de Beer has recently been sculpting bronzes of his most popular themes, which are in very high demand!
Studies: 1951-53 University of Pretoria, gaining a BA 1954 Teachers Training College, Pretoria, specialising in art and obtaining a Higher Diploma in Education 1957-60 University of South Africa, where he gained a BA(FA) 1969-70 University of Pretoria, under Professor FGE Nilant, where he was awarded an MA(FA).
Profile: A member of the National Art Society of SA and its chairman 1964-70. 1964-70 also a member of the Curatorium of the Pretoria Art Museum. 1955-58 an art teacher at Oost-Eind School, Pretoria 1958-70 an art lecturer, then a senior lecturer in the Art Department, 1970-78 Head of the Art Department and 1979-83 Vice-Rector, Pretoria College of Education. Became a full-time painter in 1983. 1975-77 a part-time political cartoonist for Hoofstad newspaper, Pretoria, also a number of illustrations for various periodicals.
Exhibitions: He has participated in numerous group exhibitions from 1960 in SA 1968 Schweickerdt Gallery, Pretoria, first of eight solo exhibitions held in SA 1981 Republic Festival Exhibition.
His work can be found in many private art collections, internationally & local.
