It is a myth that artists are supposed to be scatter brains’ and disorganised with no sense of discipline. I find that the most successful artists are keen observers with an extraordinary sense of duty and acute business acumen.
What is rare, is to find these attributes in a young artist. Christelle Pretorius is such an artist. It is reflected in her work and ethics and this ensures that she is an exceptional young artist to keep a keen eye on. Where does your inspiration come from?
I have to admit that I have a secret (somewhat unhealthy) obsession with Nieu-Bethesda. It is the most wonderful artist retreat is SA in my opinion. My husband and I need no excuse to drive down for a weekend. I tend to draw my inspiration from the vast open landscape of the area and especially the proteas and allows.
Some of my influences comes through my art students, which I thoroughly enjoy especially the children. They are not affected by our sense of space and rules when it comes to art. Their free spirits are reflected and gives me a lot of joy to help them develop. Their works are honest with no inhibitions, this allows me to reflect on where I have to go.
