Iris

A yellow iris in full bloom dominates the composition, its petals rendered in luminous ochre and gold tones. Two further iris blooms and a butterfly appear amongst slender green stems set against a softly modulated dark ground. The painting demonstrates assured brushwork and careful observation of botanical form, whilst the limited palette and intimate scale create a contemplative mood. In Heyns’ work, such floral subjects transcend decoration to become meditations upon life’s cycles and renewal.
